I have been playing golf for about 2 months now and I've heard from a PGA Pro that you want a softer ball for more spin. He also said that TopFlite balls are terrible because they're way too hard. Any Suggestions?
He's right. Pro's use soft balls so that they can get spin on their wedge shots and chips. Beginners or even average golfers usually don't need to put spin on their balls. Since they don't need spin it doesn't really matter what golf ball they use as long as its clean and not scratched or cuffed up. Im a 14 handicap and I dont use a particular ball because I find so many but I would suggest looking at golf galaxy because they have pretty cheap balls. And top flite are perfectly fine golf balls.

Just grab any golf ball if you're just starting out. No need to invest heavily on something that you're just trying. I've been playing for ten years and I still try to grab the cheapest gear possible. I work at a club and I don't even pay for my tees or golf balls….I find them out in the heavy roughs!

How serious are you? Do you play only on the weekends? I'd suggest sticking with Top Flite, but a 'spin' ball. They're usually the cheapest and if you're barely starting out, you'll lose TONS of golf balls. If you're really on a budget but want a better ball, buy Titilest X-outs.. softer, but usually have too much variation to be sold high dollar.
Sleeves at pro shops can run $10 and up.. if you're a beginner, get your fundamentals down before you worry about equipment.
I play with an old set of Ben Hogan forged irons my mother bought at a garage sale when I was 12.. and through practice I was the state champion in high school at 17 - same clubs.

A GREAT ball for >20 is the Callaway Warbird Plus. This is a great ball!! I used to play the cheap reused balls that you buy at walmart (the ones that cost 20 for 50). Those are great to learn on, because YOU WILL lose tons of balls for a while, however most of the time you will get balls that are hard as rocks!. Id say once you start shooting around the low 100s start using this ball, you will love the feel and the distance you get.

I've bought recycled Taylormade TP Red/Black LDP balls (the package I bought also had one Burner TP LDP in it, as well) at Target for $10/dozen. $9.99 to be exact. No kidding- my jaw about hit the floor when I saw them. They were mix grade, but only between AAA and AAAA (the two highest). They're awesome balls, and it beats the recycled Pro-V1 combo you see at places like Meijers, Wal-Mart or Dunham's at $30.
